Who we are
Texas Land Conservancy is a 501(c)3 conservation organization dedicated to protecting the land, water, and wildlife of Texas from the negative effects of land fragmentation and poorly-planned development. We work with communities, private landowners, and other partners to preserve land, restore native habitats, and connect people to nature.
Why Conserve Land?
Texas is losing its rural lands faster than any other state in the nation. The quality and quantity of water in rivers, streams, and reservoirs are increasingly threatened due to drought, development pressure, and population growth across the state.
95% of the land in Texas is privately owned—three times as many acres as any other state. Less than 2% of the land is protected, including state and local parks.
Vision
A diverse and expanding network of protected natural areas throughout Texas supported by a community of Texans who share a commitment to enhancing the quality of life through land conservation.
Mission
To conserve natural areas in Texas and to protect the physical and ecological integrity of their wildlife habitat, native plant communities, and scenic landscapes for the benefit of present and future generations.
What We Do
Help private landowners protect their property from land fragmentations and encroaching development pressure.
Visit each protected property annually to meet with landowners, monitor conditions, and ensure that these irreplaceable lands are protected.
Provide access to natural areas across the state through guided hikes, workdays, and other events that instill a love for the nature of Texas.
History
Texas Land Conservancy was founded in 1982 by intrepid Dallas attorney Edward C.”Ned” Fritz, known by many as the Father of Texas Conservation. In response to the increasing demand on land and water for development, Ned realized there was a need for a statewide land trust that would work to preserve lands both large and small, public and private. Ned gathered a group of grassroots volunteers to establish the Natural Area Preservation Association (NAPA), now Texas Land Conservancy (TLC).
